I replaced the head gasket at the weekend but had to reuse the inlet/exhaust manifold gasket as none of the motor factors in Eastbourne had a head gasket set in stock.........."sorry thats obsolete mate" was the usual answer. Reusing the gasket was a waste of time as it wouldnt seal properley and the car wouldnt tick over smoothly,so after a chat with Dean on clubnight I ordered a Mpi/Spi inlet gasket from MiniSpares and fitted it today. The Mpi/Spi gasket fits carburettor cars and comes with steel rienforced exhaust appetures and is of a higher quality than normal.

good choice, the standard ones you get in gasket sets are rubbish and always in no time at all brake down and leak
for the money its not bad, and one of the only decent gaskets out there.
it may say spi/mpi, but it will fit any mini engine, i have one for my 998,

On closer inspection theyre a superb quality item. The side which seals to the head is a thin steel face, the manifold side is a heat resisant card with steel reinforced exhaust ports. I brought 2 just in case. Attachments:

Ive been so busy recently with working away and sorting my nieces Clio that I havent been able to get up the garage and sort some Mini things.......and Dean I will be round to collect the bits soon. When I replaced the head gasket I noticed that the side rail of the radiator had cracked at the top and allowing the rad to float around a bit. So I decided to go for a 2 core aluminium radiator as this would also help the motor run cooler. Also the heater outlet had started to weep a tiny amount so I ve replaced tits gasket. Ever since I installed the engine with a upper engine steady the thermostat housing boltshad been too short, so tonight I cut down some stainless Metro thermostat studs and rethreaded the upper ends with a M8 die so now all is nice and tight. The car developed a miss fire from 1000-3000rpm which was traced to a bad terminal crimp at the coil and a loose connection in the two pin plug between the distributor and coil so I decided to try simplify things and do away with the faulty plug. This is the original loom. Attachments:

That makes it a lot neater and less chance for it to happen again.
Plus makes your engine bay tidier

This one is a bit more puzzleing..... Ive fitted solid mounts to the front subframe and at first the top mount bolts used to loosen off a little resulting in a knocking that was similar to really worn front swivels. The knocking started again so I checked the top mount spacers and they were loose under the bolt head but the bolts were still very tight??? So I drilled/ground out some washers to fit between the bolt head and top mount spacers to take up the slack, fitted them and the knocking is gone. Attachments:
