Well sort of good news.... DVLA c*+#ed up my car tax renewal and backdated it to March 1st instead of April 1st so the Undercoat flyer is now back on the road and ready to roll. Yesterday I went to JP Tyres and the tracking set and wheels balanced, there service was 100% and highly reccomended. After a short "shakedown" run I noticed that the drivers rear wheel was hot and that the passengers rear wheel bearing had slight play,so today they were first on the list of jobs to do. Ive also adjusted the ride hieghts to about 2 fingers claerance all round and then went for a drive in the sunshine. Attachments:

Well we've had a nice morning............ The car was booked in at Gerald Dale Motorsport to have the ignition timing checked and set following me fitting a replacement distributor as the original one had a seized vacuum advance, and the carb mixture also needed checking and adjusting as I have changed the airfilter. As usual I thought the car was fine on the way over there but driving home showed how even a few degrees here and a carb twiddle there carried out by someone who know what they're doing can transform a car. £30 well spent.......thanks Gerald.......highly recommended.
Then on the way home we stopped to speak to Mick Gain at Gainspeed in St Leonards to get a quote on having the cylinder head for our quickish 998 engine gas flowed and converted to unleaded and fitted with larger inlet valves.
Then it was onto Bexhill Gearboxes for a quote on rebuilding our Metro Turbo gearbox to use on the 998.
And finally we went to Sussex Engine Centre to get a price on re-boring the 998 and fitting new cam bearings.
I better get saving!!!..........

Is it not cheaper to stick a 1275 in N.

Suggestion I was going to make - be able to do more with a 1275 and go further... Ant

The 1275 that in it isn't the best so will need changing in the future. It might sound strange but I don't want it to go any faster so a mildly tuned 998 will be fine for me.

Most 1275 these day are worn out and need rebuilding anyway and people will still spend £500 for a worn out engine just because its painted nice
Your be surprised what kind of power you can get out of a 998.
I have built a fast road 998 for the mk1. I was going to stick a 1275 in a year or 2 later, but to be honest I think I be quite happy with the 998 . Bit of a under dog. There a nice rev'ey engine and a bit smoother running than a 1275.
There is less and less 998 out there, most people ditch them for 1275. Which seem to hold there price.
So you can build a 988 for much less , as most people just give there 998 engines away.
The mighty minis use 998 and get around 120 BHP from them!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe we will start a trend and 998 will fetch good money and everyone will start to ditch there 1275's
Ha ha ha

The way I looked at it, the current 1275 engine & box are getting tired and will need rebuilding and the prices for building a tuned engine 1275 or 998 are pretty much the same. Also, as I dont want the Mini sitting in the garage engineless over the winter while the 1275 is out being rebuilt so its easier to rebuild the 998 bit by bit to spread the cost until its complete and then spend a weekend swapping engines.
And yes Dean..........most people do give their 998s away (and an 850).......Ta.

So here's the 998 build spec.... 998 pre A+ block bored to +.060",new cam bearings, centre main strap, decked flush with pistons Kieth Calver 998 flat top +.060" pistons 12G202 (1100) cylinder head, converted to unleaded, enlarged 1 5/16" inlet valves, standard 1" exhaust valves, chamber cc t.b.c.,all work by Mick Gain at Gainspeed. MG Metro camshaft timed at 106°. Vernier timing gear Standard pressed rockers??, maybe 1.3:1 rollers if I can afford them. Lightened flywheel, balanced with crank & pulley. Titan Motorsport water heated inlet manifold matched to head and moded to take Hif44 carb. Single SU Hif44 carb with ITG filter and MED sub stack (already on 1275) Fletcher LCB with thermal wrapping and Maniflow sinle box system (already on 1275) Rebuilt MG Metro Turbo gearbox with centre oil pickup and cross pin 3.2:1 diff.

Unless you're turboing it 998s will never compare to a decent 1275.
MiniWorld's old 998 was ad far as you'd want to go for an everyday road engine and it was still more tedious than Deal or No Deal. And that's tedious.

You're right Steven, Deal or no Deal is tedious!! My thoughts, a 1275 costs the same to rebuild as a 998 so personally I'd stick a known good 998 in while splashing the cash on the 1275 and rebuilding it properly... Metro Turbo gearboxes are no different from any other rod-boxes, maybe ratio/final drive different but no stronger anywhere else.

Well the said 1275 decided to start running on 2 cylinders tonight on the way to Partridge Green to collect Lewis. A quick roadside check shows that with the engine ticking over pulling the plug caps off number 2&3 plugs doesnt effect the running but pulling the caps off 1&4 makes it stop. So hopefully its only the head gasket blown between cylinders 2&3,but a strip down tomorrow will show whats wrong. The tempareture and oil pressure were fine on the long slow drive home.

That's not good, and it's not been on for that long. Think the head needs a skim? ? So you had a 3 cylinder engine 2 small and one big cylinder on the way home. Ha ha ha

Thats right Dean, and the 2 middle cylinder were sharing air/fuel mixture-burning none of it-and chuffing some of it back out of the carb.......so the 637cc twin did well to get us home.
Ive got a BK450 to go on tomorrow, both gasket faces are now spotless so i'll check them with a straight edge and feeler guages and take it from there.
