had some overheating so just checking my thermostat, took off the housing and some extremely thick heavy deposits around the ring, is this normal? i can only assume i got a cheap gasket and its disintegrated, any help appreciated cheers alex i have created an amazing image representing the deposits using paint edit: just tested it and its working for the record

Salad cream looking goo?
That can point towards heavy breathing or oil and water mix , Ie headgasket .
As a rule I always drill a few extra 3mm holes in the thermostat to let water through the stat prior to it opening . This is recommended on Metro (no bypass hole pipe) conversions but I have been doing so on all my engines for years and years without problem .
