Thought I would start a diary for my 1990 Cooper, I have had it about a year or so now and done a couple of bits but nothing major. First thing I did a couple months after purchasing my Cooper was a stage 3 head, 1.5 high lift roller tip rockers and stage 2 manifold which got it upto 83.5Bhp. After this I decided to take out the seat because I didn't feel they were that comfy so put in two bucket sets and 4 point harnesses which are alot more supporting. Beginning of the summer I changed from standard disc to 4 pot MG Metro tubro vented ones and also put in a new huge 4 core radiator. In the last week or so my Cooper came off the road after some very worrying/odd noises coming from engine bay and it not wanted to go anywhere so to speak lol. First me and Martin thought it was just the thrust bearing because all the noise would stop with the clutch done but once released noise appears. This didn't fix the problem so engine came out for further investigation...! Engine out of mini Very empty engine bay Got abit worrying when we were draining the oil to find bits of bearing Gearbox removed from block and head Bits of bearing in gearbox Basically both sets of bearings either side of the idler gear were in bits and not there anymore....! Luckly had a spare engine so have used parts off that. I'll update more once the engine is back in the car and running ok and hopefully no more horrific noises ! Ant

we took the gear box to bexhill gear boxs for a dish wash and inspection thay said the box was good surprisingly after what came out however on further inspection the baring outer case has welded it self through heat to the gear box case so we have used a good second hand box instead with central oil pick up

It's the bits you can't see or get at without a full stripdown that can cause the most trouble - like the layshaft for example. Hopefully the new box is all good!

Martins been a god send and couldn't of ask for anymore from the guy, it's a learning process for both of us and learning as we go. All I know it would of been quite a large bill at a garage...! Anyway I'll update the thread tomorrow at some point. Ant

Well haven't done much on the mini really apart from MOT repair bits but mainly been working on my new engine which I plan to drop in within the next month or some (basically before Riv Run 2011). Havent gone over the top and spent silly money but should be quite a nice engine once tuned probably on rollers. Anyway here's some photo's of it; Did think about not saying the spec's but what the hay got nothing to hide lol. Its a Metro 1275 A+ block, SW5-07 cam with full alloy duplex timing chain, standard box with central oil pick-up (still might go X-pin), stage 2/3 head & high lift roller tip rockers which are currently on the engine in the mini at the moment and stage 2 LCB. My cooper at best pulls 83.5 Bhp on rollers so I'm hoping with new engine once setup in the mid/high 90's.... ! Ant

Looks good ant. What have you had to do to it.
You were never bothered about MPG, the way you drive,
This year at Newquay will be the first time your go in the same car twice.
But one thing after you get it back on the road take it easy for the first 500-1000 miles, damage you do by driving it hard from the start will greatly shorten your engines life and your find it will be out soon then you wanted.

If you're still running a single SU it'll be ok on fuel economy. Just make sure it's all set up properly when first started and run it in properly as Dean says.
Looks cool though, I reckon 85bhp would be a good figure to aim for. Depending on the rollers obviously.

Well I stripped it, cleaned it. Repainted the block, had the flywheel/clutch housing bead blasted and also had the timing chain and plate bead blasted. Had the gearbox put through industrial dishwasher and check out which said looked fine. Had to get where the idle gear sits on the flywheel/clutch housing machined and built back up because had worn slightly. Yeh mpg has never really been an issue and dont use the mini as much as I use to because it not down at uni with me and whenever I come back I get train. It should really be an issue what with the current climate and fuel prices at the moment! I know Dean and don't curse or put an omen on it..... lol Don't worry spoken to a couple people about wearing it in and going to kept it calm and rev's low for 1st 500 miles then do an oil change. Don't you just love mini's..... ! New engine in and everything but got a bad whining from primary gear area but when engauge clutch noise stops. Looks like its all out again this weekend and check whats wrong, either I have done something wrong with the clutch oil seal or the shims either side of the idle gear etc... (in that area) Ant

is it a new clutch and bearing? id check the bearing first. secondly did you set the primary gear end float properly i.e is it the correct size bronze thrust washer? your clearance should be 0.003"-0.006" for standard cars. best way to check is with 2 feeler gauges on either side of the crank as with just 1 feeler blade can slightly tilt the gear and consequently you'll have a incorrect clearance. id check these 2 things first as it dont involve complete strip down just a pain in the arse of getting the bell housing off. matt
