i currently have a morris mini 850 mk1 1967. My problem is, should i restore it to original, even though its missing a few bits that are hard to get hold of like seats and other bits like interior light etc or, should i modify it, maybe a old rally rep. this is where im torn because being a mark 1 it deserves to be put original and treasured. however i would love a rally rep or something similar, maybe a mighty minis britax cooper rep but i dont know if i can bring myself to do it to a mk1 or how much i will be slaughtered for doing it to a mk1 maybe i should sell or swap it for a later mini ???any thoughts would be much appreciated thanks.

As original as possible with period race/rally mods! Seats not that difficult to get hold of, ask Dean he managed to get hold of a set, also little bits like the interior lamp also appear on ebay and at most of the shows in the autojumbles. Keep the modifications 'bolt on', you can get away with lots that way, bigger wheels, different engine/box etc. A paint job in an original colour but with a contrasting roof colour will give you most of the 'Cooper' look if thats what you are after. It may upset some, but giving an 850 the Cooper look is not a new thing, go for it!

there are a few of us in the club with mk1 now,
and in my eyes the best looking of all the other mk 's ,
best to keep it original and if you want to modify it , make it subtle /or period mods, it will holds its value more that way,
i am restoring a 62 morris mini, putting back to original but with period mods like a cooper engine and cooper 's' brakes, but other than that everything else is original and subtle,
you can still find the parts if you look and ask, try the mini cooper register forum, there are alot of anorakes on there which know too much about the mini!!!
there are alot of people who make the mk1-2 look like works rally/ race cars, but finding the original period parts are hard and very expensive, i saw some works mini dash instrument go for £1100, stupid money
what ever you do please dont cut the arches for big 13" chrome alloys , cut off the front end for a fibre glass flip front , stick different performace stickers all over and buy loads of cheap crap chrome,
at the end of the day its you car for you to use, so make it how you want it

britax has been done several times , go for your own look .
Mine is sort of based on period track racer style , 2 period style buckets trimmed in the same trim it would of had new 1960 powder blue and grey flecks , 1340 engine , lowered sorted supension , 4 pot uprated brakes no heter , no rear seats and perspex windows ,. Its lightweight. 4.5 x 10 minilife wheels to same style as the 60's works cars (not all minilights are the same) to the correct Cooper S offset so the wheels do not require there 16570/10 tyres covering with screw on wheel arches. I do get fed up when people say its a cooper . The colour is from Porsche , i wanted mk1 surf blue but at the time loads of mk1's were appearing in the 2 mags painted surf blue. So i went for something else. There wont be another mk1 painted my colour . As Dean says dont bolt to much to the outside , the mk1 is the purest of all mini shapes , they only need a set of period wheels to set off any mk1 whether it be 850 or 1275's . You start bolting on sports pack arches , 13 inch wheels , spots, fogs, stripes and chrome tat it will look pants . You want to do that then buy a 90's car and make that look pants instead .

Thanks i was not thinking of 13 inch sports pac mods, i was thinking keeping it mk1 style just with tastfull mods like wheels etc, but maybe its best just to keep it as origanal as pos. maybe just upgrade the interior but keeping it retro. i dont want to go works or cooper style really because its just not one and like you say, its all been done before and i think a mini should be badged as what it is. thanks for your views they have helped a lot.

I'd fit a set of 10" Rosepetals A0032s, lower it slightly without arches, period bucket seats and a Smiths taco, but evrything else original... mmmmm

rosepetals would be nice, next best thing to real minilites,
hard to find and there not cheap, but look very nice on a mk1

you can get them from Japan with 'Cooper car Co' on them, but given the exchange rate it's probably cheaper to get some split rims!!

Vortz Racing make them in this country . Think the size is 4.75x10 . I did price them when building my mk1 but they were about £140+ each about 5 years ago .

Knew they were expensive . It was bad enough replacing a damaged Minilife after that BMW forced me off the road last year . Imagine replacing a Vortz out of your own pocket because of someone else.

Tried that Neil and buggered up the front panel.
Put the Splits on Mk1 . Was ok initially but when I turned when on a slight camber the weight of the car pushed down over one corner and the tyre rubbed the front panel opening up the seam between wing and front panel and rippling the front panel to . No doubt it would have been ok with a standard height car but thats not what mine is about . If i have spare cash i will get the front panel cut back and re-lipped to take the seam trim again so it all looks standard allowing me to get these bloody Split rims on without using arches after all the years of having them .
